Make a Fresh Cut. After picking your tree, you’ll need to cut about a half-inch off the bottom. “These trees have sap in them that seals off the bottom,” says Johnny Wishon of Wishon Evergreens in Sparta. “When you make that fresh cut and put it in water, the tree will rehydrate itself.”
